Identifying and working with cannabis products requiring remediation

TABLE OF CONTENTS:

A cannabis product sent out to a 3rd party lab for state required testing can fail any number of tests for any number of reasons: bacteria, mold, heavy metals, etc. Occasionally, depending on the product and the state where the testing is taking place, the option to "remediate" that product exists. The options vary, but usually this involves taking flower products and drying them for an additional length of time, or extracting that flower into oil.

If after the second lab test the product that was in need of remediation passes, it will be considered "remediated" and will be marked in both Distru and Metrc with a triangle with an "!" in the middle, along with the message "This product contains remediated product."

Packages Requiring Remediation: Metrc

  1. Identify the package(s) that require remediation by looking for a Lab Testing Status that is "TestFailed".

  2. Execute the remediation action you are choosing to use (extracting failed flower into oil, drying flower for a longer length of time, or simply destroying the product).

  3. If you choose to dry a failed flower package for an additional length of time, make sure to adjust the package after the additional dry time has elapsed to account for the appropriate amount of moisture loss.

  4. If you choose to extract a failed flower package into oil, you'll have to create a new oil package from the flower package, making sure to check the box that says "Remediate Product" when doing so. You will also have to record the date of remediation, the method of remediation used, and the exact steps taken while performing that method.

5. The Lab Testing status should now show as "Remediated".

6. You can now create new lab samples from the newly remediated package(s) to be sent out for the second (and final) test.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a general overview of the steps to perform directly in Metrc when dealing with products requiring remediation. Your individual state may have slight changes to the process. It is your responsibility to know and understand what those slight changes may be.

Making Assemblies in Distru with Packages Requiring Remediation

In Distru, a package that requires remediation will appear with the following symbol and message within your package table:

This symbol will also display when you add this package to Assemblies as an ingredient so that you or someone on your staff (hopefully) doesn't mistakenly combine packages requiring remediation with packages that don't, as the end product made by combining packages that need remediation with those that don't will itself require remediation:

Remediated Products: Distru

A product that undergoes the remediation process after failing its first lab test, that is sent out for a second round of testing and passes, is then considered to be remediated product. It will be designated as such in Distru and Metrc with a triangle symbol containing an "!":

In both Distru and Metrc you ARE NOT able to combine packages that contain remediated material with packages that don't. In Distru, you'll see a message like this when you attempt to combine Ingredients on an Assembly, one of which contains remediated product and one that doesn't:

You are, however, able to add several remediated products as ingredients into a given Distru Assembly. The ingredients for an Assembly must either be all remediated products or all non-remediated products. There is no combining the two.
